Comic workshop, day one

"Drawing is easy", says Leif Packalén, head of the comic workshop. "Anybody can create comic about the subject which is important and wellknown for itself", he explains about the idea. "Almost any issue, idea or fact can be expressed in a comic".

"You should start with the story, then comes manuscripting and in the last part drawing", explains Packalén for the class which contains four youngs:

Andrea from Mexico,

Awubwa from Uganda,

Sofia from Finland and

Darwit from Ethiopia.

Drawings and comics will be presented next Tuesday in the final demonstration in the Cultural Arena Gloria.

Music workshop, day one

Music workshop started with introduction to rhytms and drumplaying. Groupleader is Aleksi Ojala and the participants are from four different countries. There are participants from Sweden, Finland, Uganda and Hungary.

First the group started to do some rhytms with their body. Youngsters had to think their own rhytms in small groups. After that they all clapped the rhytms together.

After the lunchbreak group started to play djembe-drums. The leader of the workshop showed some easy tones, bases and higher tones, and after that the group concentrated to make one music piece together.
They sang with drumming:

"You and I will play this jankadi on and on." *
"Hölkyn kölkyn."
"You can learn this from me."
"We will sing and play!"


* Jankadi is rhytm from Africa.

The group was very concentrated on working together as a team, and it seemed like everyone had fun during this first day.

"I really like rhytms and it is so exciting that all these rhytms and people are working together so well" , said one participant from the Northern countries.

Rest of the day music group worked together with drama group.

Radio workshop, day one

“We started the Radio workshop with great enthusiasm and the atmosphere in the workshop is very exciting. There is little time left, but they will try to take full benefit off of what’s left”, says Ike Chime, the leader of the workshop.

Chime has worked in the media for over a decade now and has had a wide range of different tasks. He has worked as a radio journalist for Radio City and is currently working as producer for Lähiradio.

Drama workshop, day one

Drama workshop was the choice of five young ladies. They had such a fun day expressing themselves and getting to know each other. Watch a video clip and photos below.



Head of the workshop, Ulla Tarvainen encouraged drama group members to enjoy of self expression. Main idea of the plays was to improvise and dare to touch, make noise and be their own selves.

In the middle they took a break from expressing and thought of HIV/Aids issues. One task was to create a young person who is suffering from HIV/Aids affects. Ulla drew a human figure and the group created it's character.

The start

The first morning of HIV/Aids workshops started on a rainy weather. Instead the atmosphere inside was warm and friendly from the very first moment. Youngsters from around the World got to know each other by playing some “warm-up” games. After that they discussed about HIV/Aids related issues and wrote down their thoughts in six groups.

Here are some examples of their thoughts:

“HIV/Aids is a global problem that affects on children’s lives by forcing them to grow up too early.”

“Break up the silence!”

“Use all kind of media to make the information about HIV/Aids widespread!”

“Children should have the right to be children.”

“Europeans too often think that HIV/Aids is not their problem.”

The whole group will stay together until two o’clock when they will be divided in to four workshops; drama, radio, animation and music. Each group will prepare some piece of work which will be introduced to audience next Tuesday. You will find out what happens in the workshops by reading this blog!
